DE-INSTITUTIONALIZE
Getting Parents Involved
An increasing number of parents ingore the educational endeavors of their children. Whatever the reasons... divorce, job commitments, income issues, substance problems, or personal pursuits, your children ultimately reflect your example. Your actions can signal to your children that their education is a secondary or tertiary concern.

Skip the TV and spend time at the dinner table reviewing the day's events at school. Budget at least 1/2 hour per day reviewing school work. Hold your children accountable for attention to accuracy, detail and completeness. Avoid the temptation of letting the State take care of your children's education. Take the lead, take control, take responsibility. Your children will thank you later.

America Without the DOE
What if the Department of Education was dissolved or contracted to outside organizations? If you've become institutionalized you're probably thinking "but who would take care of our education?"

Through virtue of the DOE Americans expect a government agency comprised of government employees to prepare students for life in the private sector - hardly a sound strategy. So why does this lumbering giant still exist?

The DOE gained footing on the basis that an education is a right rather than a priviledge. Food, shelter, money, jobs, clothing, eyesight and transportation are all fairly important facets of our lives too, but most of us meet these needs independently - and quite effectively.

You already pay into education... why not demand the most for your money? Disband the DOE and force educational competition.
PUBLIC EDUCATION NEEDS TO GET BACK TO BASICS
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Restoring Excellence to Public Education
Take a moment to consider a few mission statements and school mottos:

  • Simplicity of Life, Directness of Purpose, and Self-Reliance.
  • Committed to excellence in the education of young women...
  • To create opportunities that will equip students... to become productive members of society.
  • To champion excellence in academics and in the arts, in athletics, and residential life... to think for yourself.

To what is your public school committed? Does it offer a mission statement? If it did, what would it say? Chances are the mission statement would be filled with politically correct, apologetic, service oriented verbiage devoid of commitments to excellence, self reliance and achievement.

Revisit Teaching Credentials and Remove Central Planning
Have you seen a teaching credentials test or examined the process through which teachers must pass to become an eligible instructor? We must enhance teacher academic standards and, more importantly, allow local districts and local teachers the freedom to instruct as determined locally. State mandated methods are an abysmal failure. Let teachers teach.

    Getting Back To Basics
Reading, writing, arithmatic, science, performing arts... while not a complete list of responsibilities it's a good place for public schools to refocus their energies. Today, public schools spend too much class time introducing indoctrination and politically motivated fodder than they do honing your child's basic skills.

De-Institutionalize by Introducing Choice and Competition
Students who embrace academics and demonstrate a commitment to achievement should be rewarded, even if teacher's unions fear school choice. These unions and the DOE consistently block such efforts citing valid concerns such as "some schools will be abondoned." So be it. The time has arrived to raise the bar systemwide. If motivated students abandon schools in favor of superior options elsewhere then we all benefit.

Hire Education Professionals and Judge Teacher Performance
Do you want the best teachers or the strongest unions instructing your children? We need creative, motivated teachers who want to teach more than they want union benefits, extended vacations, tenure and a full time job 3/5ths of the year. If you teach and love your job we thank you...if, however, you're a teacher because of pensions and benefits please reconsider your values. After all, it's about them... not you.
